PASCO, WA -- A national tragedy has turned into a scammers opportunity. Crooks are out to get people trying to donate to Fort Hood victims. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) warns that criminals are looking to take advantage of your generosity, asking for money for victims of the family.

Experts from the BBB say to be wary of charities that are reluctant to answer reasonable questions about their operations, finances and programs. Also, check into where your money is going and how much of your gift will be used for the activity mentioned. No more than 1/3 of your donation should go to administrative costs.

You can check the BBB website specifically for charities. An "F" rating is a good indication that you don't want to donate.

"To have someone take the case and have it not go to where it's supposed to, really hurts because you've given money in good faith thinking they're doing the same in good faith," said BBB representative, Norma Miller.

Experts say be cautious of appeals that are long on emotion and too short on describing the charity. And never give cash.
