No New Jail for Franklin County
By Lena Vargas
FRANKLIN COUNTY-- Passage of proposition one in last night's election would have provided tax money for expansion of the overcrowded Franklin County Jail. But it doesn't look like that's going to happen.
At last check, the measure was being rejected 52 to 48 percent. Sheriff Richard Lathim tells Action News he had hopes taxpayers would be proactive and not wait until the situation gets worst. "A lot of times you can calm a situation by taking someone in we don't want to be in a position where we have the daily news of what goes on in Yakima County, all the shootings and stabbings before people say oh yeah, I want to pay for this," said Lathim. Yakima County did overwhelmingly approve the continuation of a law enforcement tax. But here in Franklin County, the sheriff is looking at booking restrictions. That means not all criminals will spend time behind these bars. |
