Apple Harvest Wraps Up
By Lena Vargas
FRANKLIN COUNTY—Some apple farmers are in a rush to get their apples off the trees before the real cold sets in.
Tuesday at Douglas Farm we saw some evidence of what a frost can do. Leaves turned brown from a cold spell just a few days ago. But fortunately for the grower, John Douglas, it wasn’t enough to damage the fruit. Now as harvest season ends, he and others hope for no more rain and no more extreme cold. “As farmers, we're always at the peril of the weather. We try to work regardless. We've had a lot of rain days recently so we haven't been able to pick. We'd like to get all our apples up before November really,” said Douglas. Douglas aims to get all his “Fuji” apples off the trees by the end of the week and then he’ll pick the last of his apples—“Pink Ladies” in another field. |
