Tracking the Most Dangerous Intersections in Kennewick
By Chelsea Kopta
KENNEWICK, WA -- If you've been there, then you might already know: West Clearwater Avenue and Edison Street is the most dangerous intersection in Kennewick. A Kennewick police report showed it had 22 accidents there so far this year.
"And it's becoming - it seems like we get more and more volume this year," Kennewick Police Sargent Ken Lattin said. It jumped four spots from last year. "We usually hear the accident before we see it," Shelby's Floral and Gifts Owner Jackie Brown said. Brown has a front row seat to the action from her shop Shelby's floral at the corner on the intersection. Traffic is usually good for business but, in this case, she said drivers cause safety concerns right outside her door. "What we find is the most dangerous is the people who don't want to wait at the light and cut across our parking lot," Brown said. Clearwater always makes the list but, this year, Edison is becoming a hot spot for accidents. It made the list in *three of the top five most dangerous spots. Here's a breakdown: 1. W. Clearwater Ave. & North *Edison 2. W. Canal Drive & North *Edison 3. N. Columbia Center Boulevard & W Quinalt 4. W. Clearwater Avenue & N Columbia Center Boulevard 5. W. Metaline Ave & N *Edison "Edison is that main drag off the freeway, you get people going in both directions so I can believe it," Brown said. Part of the problem with these streets , police said, is the sheer volume of traffic. "And then part of it is some engineering," Lattin said. Lattin said Edison's undergone lots of lane changes and cone zones, often sending crash numbers into overdrive. It means, police are stepping up enforcement. "We try and get out and be across the city," Lattin said. Overall crashes dropped by 50 since last year, and injuries dipped by 30. But it's clear, if you've driven here, it's a spot police still need to work on. We checked into numbers in Pasco and Richland as well. In Pasco, Burden Boulevard and Road 68 is the most collision-prone street. Last time we checked Richland, Leslie and Gage stole the number one spot but we didn't get a call back about updated numbers. |
