Booth Set Up for County Seat Petition
By Molly Kelleher
KENNEWICK -- If you're headed to the Benton County courthouse, you'll probably bump into Fred Staples.
The retired judge is camping out to get your signature. For years, he has petitioned to move the county seat from Prosser to Kennewick. And just this month, a court sided with Staples on the number of signatures he needs to get the issue on the ballot. "The judge made the decision right on the bench right there. He was well prepared. But without that ruling I would have been out of business, I would have needed 10,000 signatures," Staples said. Instead, Staples says he needs about 3,000 signatures. So he'll be out there on and off for the next three months along with his usual spot at the Benton-Frainklin County Fair. |
