Where are the Jobs?
By Molly Kelleher
TRI-CITIES — Forget the classifieds, Action News is doing the search for you.
You already see our "Hot Job of the Day" segment. And as we go digging through those listings, we noticed a few local companies that don't just have one or two openings — they have several. Help is wanted and maybe it's something for you. Scientists come from around the globe to work in PNNL labs. It is just a slice of the technology and jobs on the PNNL campus. PNNL has dozens of postings at WorkSource. The lab's own jobsite has even more, not just in high-tech fields. "Administrative assistants, crafts people who help maintain the campus. The jobs are across the spectrum," said PNNL spokesperson Franny White. In fact, PNNL says right now they have more than a hundred openings and there's more to come from stimulus money. The jobs are tied to government priorities in high demand like climate change and counter-terrorism. The openings in Richland have jobseekers coming from all over to cash in. "We have a lot of people from San Francisco right now because the Bay area economy is not good. So that new flight from San Francisco is a big help to fly people in for job interviews," White said. It's not just the science and technology industry, the tourism industry is sparking job openings, too. The Pasco Red Lion has six job openings right now. Action News talked with the people who do the hiring for Pasco Red Lion. They tell us applications have poured in. Over the past month they've had a dozen WorkSource postings. Job seekers sometimes are even walking in and interviewing on the spot. Another regular on the job posts board: ConAgra. As of this week, four jobs are up for grabs from sales to finance. So next time you hear the national pundits gripe about job losses, remember it's not all doom and gloom. Local companies are hiring. |
