TRI-CITIES — This weekend was Washington’s first statewide open house.

Home after home was opened to potential buyers across the state.

Realtors used the opportunity to educate buyers and sellers to changes in the housing market.

“Interest rates are at historic lows,”

Realtors told Action News there are a lot of people on the fence, but warn that buyers shouldn't wait too long.

“We're not going to have enough houses for the people who are coming up. If you are thinking about buying or selling, now is the time,” Windermere broker, Susan Shay-Johnson insists.

Homes priced under $200,000 are going fast.

A house that Action News checked out had been on the market for just over a month, and today someone called in an offer.

Susan Shay-Johnson has been in real estate for 10 years, and says fewer than a thousand homes are on the market right now. There are usually more than 1400. And teh supply is dropping.

Most people are attracted to the low price ranges.

“Most people are trying to be as cautious economically as they can; just the least amount of cost for the largest amount of house,”Johnson says.

Jerry Bastin with the Washington Association of Realtors Business Practice Committee says he hopes the open house brings a boom in buyers.

He hopes it will help convince the banking industry that houses are selling and it should free up more funding for builders and buyers.

The market has improved. Home sales were up 17% in May.
