Extreme Winter Weather Hurts Ski Season
By Sade MalloyWhite Pass -- The wicked winter weather is over which means so is the ski season. Mother Nature's given the folks at White Pass a little bit of everything. First no snow, then too much snow, even extreme wind. It's been a tough season weather wise for the folks over at White Pass Ski Resort. First, they didn't have enough snow and opened about three weeks late, then they had too much. "They had all those problems with the road but that happens and look what we've got now," says Steve Hausmann. Highway 12 and the resort were both snowed in and forced to evacuate on the first of the year. Resort officials say they were closed about eight days due to extreme weather. Kathleen Goyette, White Pass Ski Resort says, "We've seen a decrease in visitorship probably about 15% less than last year." Despite the rocky start, White Pass die hards we talked to this last weekend of the season say it's been a good Winter. "Skiing is a big part of what I do in the Winter time so I ski about 50 days a year," says Bob Barwin, skier. And happy skiers mean big business. White Pass Ski Resort is hoping next Winter makes up for the low numbers this year. "Right now we're up over last year by about 10% we're attributing that to the great snow this year," says Kathleen Goyette, White Pass Ski Resort. There's no better way of keeping local ski resort in business than marketing excellent Winter conditions. Now if only mother nature would do her part. |
