Utility Credit: Saving You Money!

RICHLAND--This is good news for Richland residents.

You'll be getting a break on your utility bill.

Bob Allen lives in Richland, he's been in the city since the late 60's.

He hadn't heard about the proposal by the City of Richland to put some money back in his pocket

"It would be great, right now I'm the only one working and we help my son and his small family as best that we can, they live just a few blocks away so every little bit helps," Bob Allen said.

The City of Richland was given a huge chunk of change from Bonneville Power, because they over charged utility companies.

"Bonneville was instructed by the courts to essentially fix the situation," Ken Mey said.

So the city is divvying up nearly 3.7 million bucks among it's customers.

Right now they're just waiting on approval from city council later this month.

"Anytime you can put money back in the rate payers pocket is good," Mey said.

The credit is about a 7 to 10 percent savings on your bill.

That means on a winter power bill at about 125 dollars, you'll see a credit of about $8.80 for the next 11 to 12 months or whenever the money is gone.

It's not huge, but Bob says in his neighborhood everything counts.

"It's mostly Hanford retirees that struggle on a fixed income, they all have a tough time making their bills so I think this would be really welcomed news for all of them," Allen said.

The city tells me that Bob, his neighbors, and all customers should start to see the credit in March.

The proposal goes to city council on January 20th and is expected to be approved.

The city tells us that they opted not to give a cash payment to customers because it wouldn't be as cost effective.
