Weather Cancels and Delays Dozens of Holiday Flights
By Rudabeh Shahbazi
PASCO-- Anyone hoping to fly to the West Side to visit family or make a connection, is out of luck this weekend. The winter storm caused dozens of delays and cancellations, leaving passengers stranded at Pasco, Yakima and Walla Walla.
"The time keeps getting bumped up every few moments," said Casonia Sade, who was on her way to Seattle. "It just keeps changing and changing, later and later and later. I might as well just bring a sleeping bag and just sleep here." Some travelers had been bumped for days, and as more flights were canceled, the cue for new tickets grew longer. Frustrated passengers missed connections and had to rework hotel reservations and package deals. "I'm finally able to rebook my flight after waiting about 40 minutes in line," said Jonathan Schiattenholzer. "Now we're going to be getting out of here Tuesday at 5, instead of now, today." Some travelers waited in long lines to rebook their flights. Others tried to get through on the jammed phone lines. Kelly Rogers, who was planning to fly to Hawaii with four of her family members, popped open her laptop to find a new ticket online. "I couldn't even get out of our neighborhood, it was so snowy," said Rogers. "This is my first time out of the house. I can't go back there, I'll go insane." Some people, like Virginia Opgenorth, realized they wouldn't make it to their destinations by Christmas, and gave up altogether. "My daughter and son in law drove me here, and after I checked in, they dropped me off at security, and then they left," she said. "So now I have to call them to have them come pick me up again." The airport restaurant benefited from the chaos and confusion. Its business went up 30 percent over the weekend. "It's been really crazy," said Roberto Rosales, who works at the restaurant. "We had a full house Thursday. There was a line out the door." Christmas is just days away, and stranded travelers have little choice but to hope for the best. "If they're not irritated, they're just kind of laid back, like OK, whatever," said Schiattenholzer, about his fellow passengers. "We can't control the weather. We'll just sit back and wait."
