WASL Scores: Where do local high schools stack up?
By Molly Kelleher
TRI-CITIES - WASL results are out and we wanted to go beyond the numbers to see how schools really stack up. Action News took the microscope to districts in the Tri-Cities.
A flurry of scores, charts and percentages were released from the state Tuesday. But beyond the WASL numbers we wanted to ask the real experts what this means. We printed out the results for every major high school in the Tri-Cities and showed them to high school students. Most were pretty competitive, guessing their school tested best. But the grades tell the tale. In the Kennewick school district, this WASL round goes to Kamiakin. The braves edged out Southridge and Kennewick High. "We dominated! We killed Kennewick," said one Kamiakin. But don't get too cocky, Richland High students did better overall. Jeff Wood is a Richland High Junior. Kaitlyn Quinn goes to Kennewick High. "It's interesting to me the science score, it's so low in Kennewick maybe it's pushed more in Richland," said Quinn. "Oh definitely. If you pass the science WASL you get to bump up your letter grade at the end of the year," said Wood. Pasco High School is pretty similar to Kennewick High, both are in the low range. The red flag at Pasco High is the math score. It is the lowest in the Tri-Cities. Only 30% percent passing, not even one in three. It's like the state's playing "good cop", "bad cop" this week. They release scores Tuesday and have highlighted promising trends. But come Thursday the bad news: we'll know which schools aren't making the grade. Last year 40 local schools made that list. And if you want to see how your school stacked up. |
