Murray: Democrats fired up for Obama

WASHINGTON (AP) - Sen. Patty Murray of Washington state says Democrats are excited about Barack Obama and willing to put their differences behind them.

Murray, a superdelegate to the Democratic convention in Denver, initially backed New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton but later endorsed Obama, the party's presumptive nominee. She said she has talked to many former Clinton supporters who want to be heard but know they must unite behind Obama for the party to capture the White House.

Clinton supporters "want to have a voice here," Murray said in a phone interview, "but they know that in order for Hillary to be effective in the future, we need a Democratic White House, and they are ready to lay down whatever they need to move on and fight for that."

Some women who backed Clinton "were really, really passionate about the chance to see the first woman ever in the White House," Murray said Monday, counting herself among that group. Still, she added, the former Clinton supporters "know they have to put that aside and keep working for that someday in the future. They know that everything they care about as Democrats is at stake in this election, and they are ready to go to work for it."

Murray said she knows both Obama and running mate Joe Biden well, and is excited about the Democratic ticket.

"I have worked with Senator Obama. I know he is going to be just a great president," Murray said. "He sits next to me on the Veterans Affairs Committee, and he shares my passions and he is a great leader and it was not hard for me to make that decision at all" to support him.

Murray called Biden, a veteran Delaware senator, a close friend.

"When he is in the White House I can pick up the phone and talk about issues that are important to Washington state," Murray said.

Murray, who arrived in Denver Sunday night, said she is especially impressed by the energy of young delegates, many attending their first convention.
