RICHLAND-- Parents are pulling their kids out of daycare due to the rising costs.

That's why the Richland School District applied for a grant for more than $200,000 to put together a free childcare program for toddlers at Tapteal and Jason Lee Elementary Schools.

"Families aren't able to afford sending their child to either a childcare or a community preschool, so we had a lot of requests for, 'Hey, is the District offering anything?'" said Childhood Coordinator Bonnie Wickler.

The program starts at the end of September and will go through the school year. The emphasis will be on educational and social development to prepare kids for kindergarten.

The Kennewick School District already has a similar program in place.

Applications are available through the Richland School District Special Programs Department. The program can take 34 students.
