Local Soldier Snapping Pictures to Raise Awareness About Suicide

By Chelsea Kopta

RICHLAND -- Wars and wounds aren't the only reasons some troops never come home.

Now, a local soldier is snapping pictures to raise awareness about suicide.

Army Specialist Kyle Steinwand of Richland was recognized for a picture he took. It will now be used in a national campaign to prevent suicide in the military.

The Hanford High grad received a special award, a coin and letter from top Pentagon officials, in Albuquerque Wednesday.

His mom told Action News the issue has special meaning to their family.

"He has kind of like the first hand idea of what it feels like to be feeling that low -- that somebody would even consider that -- so if he can pull somebody out of that way of thinking, that's great," Kyle's mom Dea Steinwand said.

The campaign will target the growing number of suicides in the military.

Last year, the Army reported 2,100 suicides.
