Wash. unemployment rate up slightly in July
By Associated PressOLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - Washington's unemployment rate has jumped to 5.7 percent, the third increase in three months. The state Employment Security Department says the rate increased in July, up from June's revised rate of 5.4 percent. July's unemployment is a significant increase over last year's rate of 4.6 percent, but it's on pace with the national rate of 5.7 percent. More than 189,000 people are looking for work in Washington. The largest job growth in July was in government, with 900 new jobs, followed by the retail and information sectors, each with 800 jobs. The largest declines were in financial activities and in professional and business services, each down 300 jobs. |
