FINLEY, Wash. -- Smoke was sent billowing up into the sky Monday near Hover Park where a brush fire grew to more than 500 acres. It burned near the intersection of Meals Rd. and East Toothaker Rd.
Crews told KEPR Tuesday morning the fire was fully contained.
About 24 fire crews worked to save more than a dozen homes and buildings.
Although they are calling it safe now, neighbors were no doubt worried.
"We just prayed and hope everything would be safe and all the firefighters would get it under control," said neighbor Pat St. Hilare.
"It's an early season," said Benton County Fire District #1 Battalion Chief Tom Cole. "It's the middle of June. We don't usually burn this active until mid-July."
Crews were being released Tuesday to fight other fires in the county, but firefighters will remain on scene to watch for hot spots. It's not yet clear what started this fire.
