Scammed By A Landscaper
By Robin Woodson
UNION GAP -- 88 year-old Leonor Gallegos says she spends a lot of time gardening with her family, but when a man posing as a landscaper came by, she says she was scammed, and it all started by the way he came to the house.
"Family, friends, they know to come to the back door of the house," Mario Gallegos said. He says his mom was a victim of scam. People who know his family, never use the front door, and when a man pretending to be a landscaper came to the house, he went straight for the back door. Mario's elderly mother was all alone at the time. The poser told her he was sent out from Valley Spray, a landscaping company in the lower valley, and he was there to spray her trees and bushes for $75. "My mother said that is too much, the person says, $50 or anything that you have, any amount you have," Mario explained. He says that's when the fake landscaper followed his mother back to her door and demanded something. He says his mom was so scared, she gave the man $50 just to get him to go away. "I wish I could be there and I wish I could see this person, I wish that I could just have five minutes with this person type of thing," Mario said. Mario admits he may never get his five minutes with the crook, but he says he's using his constitutional right to make sure the next scammer skips his mom's house. Mario says he's not planning on breaking the law, but willing to do what it takes to protect his mother. As for the guy who scared his mom out of $50, he says he hopes the thief learns a lesson. "Maybe he learns from this mistake and maybe think, you know, how he would feel if I was to do this to his mother," Gallegos said. Leonor's family tells Action News, to keep her safe, they're going to make sure someone's at home with her at all times to protect her from it happening again. Union Gap Police say right now they don't have any suspects or good leads, and the case is now inactive. |
