Bodies Of All Missing Tribal Fishermen Now Recovered
By Valerie Hurst
The bodies of all three missing fishermen have been found.
James Peter Junior was found Sunday, Gailen Espirito's body was taken out of the water Tuesday morning, and Rommel Strom's was located late Tuesday afternoon. The men disappeared about two weeks ago. We talked to Davis Washines on the phone--he's an uncle to the men. He confirmed the tragic news with Action News. The men's capsized boat was found near the mouth of the Wind River near Carson. Even though the search expanded well beyond that initial area, the recovered bodies were eventually found close to where the boat capsized. Searchers accomplished this by using a special "body net" they constructed. Washines says the custom net was like something you'd use to catch a shark--something he's never seen used to find humans. But apparently the net was able to sweep areas too rough for divers. The Yakama Nation took over the search from the Inter-tribal Fish Commission last week. Washines told us assistance from all agencies has made this an amazing effort. Washines says James Peter Junior's funeral services are being held at the nation. There's no word yet on services for the other two men. |
