TRI-CITIES, Wash. -- Following the re-opening of the northbound lanes, WSDOT now says the southbound lanes won't be fully closed until Friday night. It was originally planned to close the southbound lanes completely on Thursday.
The new scheduled means a nighttime closure from 8pm-5am Wednesday and Thursday, followed by a full closure at 9pm on Friday. The Blue Bridge isn't expected to reopen southbound until 5:30am Wednesday.
Replacing 30 year old bridge joints became a more complicated process than originally expected. The re-opening of the northbound lanes was delayed by 48 hours after crews found hidden steel beams under the concrete. These weren't part of the original blueprints and required more demolition work.
There's been an increase in accidents on state roads near the Blue Bridge since the closure.
