WSP scours the road for DUI offenders 24 hours a day
TRI-CITIES, Wash. -- Washington State Troopers make it their priority to scour the roads looking for DUI offenders not just at night but also during the day.
It's a crime that happens when the sun is up -- much more than you'd think. And patrols are resulting in more arrests.
Despite having the same number of troopers on the road in the Tri-Cities arrests are up 50 percent from January of last year to January of this year.
Twenty-two suspected drunk drivers pulled off the roads then forty-two this year. They credit our mild winter.
"What impacts our ability to remove those drivers from the road way this time of year is just weather. Whether or not we have the ability to be in a proactive or reactive mode," says Lt. Roger Wilbur
Local taverns say they'll do their part to encourage people to always have a plan to arrive home safely.
"We don't like seeing anybody driving intoxicated or leaving here intoxicated. We do promote taxi cabs, a DD, walking if they have to," says April Strifer
It's not worth the danger of getting on the road drunk when troopers are out there watching.
