Grandson main suspect in Grandmother's murder

KENNEWICK -- An 87-year-old grandmother has become the Tri-Cities' first murder victim this year. Viola Williams, 87, was found dead on Friday, and hours later Kennewick police had arrested their main suspect, the victim's own grandson.

The yellow police tape outside the mobile home on W. 19th Ave. is a reminder of a horrific crime. "When I found out that she was in her house all night, I just lost it”, says Lois Mullen.

Lois Mullen speaks from shock. She says Viola Williams was her best friend. Lois told KEPR she did not hear anything unusual Friday. She saw Viola’s car parked in front of the house but no other car was there.

"I got home just in time to get a message to go see if she was okay, and everything happened right then, I went outside to see”, says Mullen. “My son told me that something was going on because there's policemen everywhere".

Police found Viola's body Friday afternoon. An hour later West Richland police took Viola's grandson, Adam Williams, 28, into custody. Police have not released a possible motive.

For Lois, it’s more than a tragedy, it's losing someone she held dear to her heart. It was a friendship like no other.

Neighbors say that Sun Meadows is a quiet, safe community. Residents here say that they were shocked at the tragedy that happened.

"Who would hurt her? I can't imagine she was a friend to everybody all of the neighbors just adored her", says Mullen.

That question is as hard as the answer, as a 28 year old man is now behind bars, accused of killing his own grandmother.

An autopsy is planned for Monday.
