TRI-CITIES - A major shakeup is coming to the Big-9 athletic conference for many high schools in the Tri-Cities.

3A and 4A schools here in the Tri-Cities and Walla Walla are planning to break away from the Big 9 to form their own league.

Schools say leaving the conference will save money on travel and keep students and staff in the classroom longer.

“Anytime you have something that changes that's been a tradition forever,” said Richland Athletic Director Mike Edwards. “There's a lot, there's a lot of things to work through, but we'll work that direction and see where it's gonna go, but it's the best for the kids and the best for our programs.”

The decision is expected to be made official on Friday.
