More violence in Richland neighborhoods
RICHLAND -- A spike in assaults, for neighborhoods that are normally peaceful. The Action News crime tracker is honing in on an increase of violent crime in Richland. It seems criminals are hitting one neighborhood at a time and we discovered the crimes are escalating.
Rick is fed up with hearing sirens like this in his neighborhood.
"I hear them a lot, it seems like they're always around," he explains.
He lives on Barth St. In Richland, a neighborhood between Jadwin and G.W Way. He says, "Neighbors kinda know everybody, probably know more about other people's business than we should by ya know, it's quiet for the most part."
It's these small quiet neighborhoods that are being targeted for crime. Police have seen more vehicle thefts and break-ins, but have seen the biggest increase in assault. Action News learned There have been 7 assault calls in just the last month. The calls to police have varied from brawls in the streets, and domestic issues, to child abuse.
"These problems seem to be in areas where the houses are being rented, I don't know if there's not a stringent screening process," says Rick.
It's important to know that Assault is not a random crime. Police are patrolling these areas more, but there's not specific people assaulting neighbors. It's usually an issue between family or friends.
"Be careful of who you pick as your friends, you can't pick your family, but you can pick your friends."
Less violence in your neighborhood may not be just the people living there, but the people that come with them. Police hope extra patrols will help car prowls and home break-ins to go down and that the violence follow.
