UMATILLA COUNTY -- Thursday marked the end of an era at the Umatilla Chemical Depot as the final barrel for their waste cleanup project came through.

Employees got together to say goodbye and sign the final barrel. The Depot has been open nearly 50 years cleaning toxic chemicals and although today was a celebration, it was also bitter sweet for those who work there.

“This isn't the end, we still have a lot of work to do with transition and closure, and one key piece to that transition is to ensure every army employee, moves on from here and achieves their future endeavors, whatever that may be,” said Lieutenant Kris Perkins.

The Depot says that last barrel will be processed as quickly as Monday, which means the project will finish six months ahead of schedule.
