Benton City Teen in Hospital After Hitting School Bus
BENTON COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT NEWS RELEASE -- On 05-24-2011 at about 1439 hours, deputies from the Benton County Sheriff’s Office responded to the report of a Green Ford Windstar Minivan striking a Yellow 2010 Blue Bird School Bus after pulling onto Horne Road from Irene. The van veered into bus’ lane of travel and struck it on the side of the bus, causing serious damage to the front driver’s side of the minivan.
The driver of the van, a 17 year old male from Benton City received probable internal injuries and was transported to Kadlec Hospital in “serious” condition.
The driver of the school bus, a Ki-Be School district employee was uninjured, but one of the four high school students on the bus received an injury to the head near his eye. He, too, was transported to Kadlec Hospital by ambulance.
The accident is still under investigation, but indications are that the driver of the van did not see the school bus as he was distracted and looking at students near the roadway. It is believed that the driver of the minivan was not wearing a seatbelt.
