Cool Weather Could Break Tri-Cities Record for April
TRI-CITIES -- Our April weather is pacing to be the coldest on record.
The calendar says it's spring, but it sure doesn't feel like it. Our Storm Trackers have dug up the figures on our current conditions.
KEPR's Jay Frank explained, "I decided to call up our friends at the National Weather Service since monthly records aren't available to the public. So they did some digging, and found out, yes, this month is really strange."
Strange because we're about 7 degrees cooler than normal. No bitter blast, just constantly below the norm.
After doing the research, KEPR can confirm we are on track for the coldest April since the National Weather Service stated keeping records in the 1930's.
And you don't have to look at the temperatures to know something is off. Out at Columbia Park, a couple days before May, we found very few visitors. And those that were out, were bundled up in a jacket.
One woman said, "Two days away from May, and I think we should not be wearing jackets. It should be warmer."
Scott McLeod is not from around here, but he's looking to move to the Tri-Cities, "So far we met nice people, but it is a little quirky that it's this cold in April."
The last coldest April was in the 1930's, at 55.8 degrees. Right now we're sitting at an average of 55.3 degrees, so if things stay this way, it will be a record breaker for the Tri-Cities.
And we're not the only ones with strange weather right now. On the westside, spring is feeling a lot more like late winter, with more snow expected across the Cascades. April is also very close to setting a new record as the wettest in Portland's history.
