BASIN CITY -- There have been delays and more money spent, but officials still hope to open a new housing complex for farm workers in time for asparagus season.

The builders were hoping to open the Basin City housing for 96 workers this week, but the Health Department required a new septic system and a deeper drilling for the project’s well water.

That wasn’t anticipated and cost about $65,000 more. Federal taxpayer dollars paid for the more than $3 million project.

When neighbors first heard of this project, some asked county commissioners to stop construction. They were worried about a rise in crime. But a Franklin County Sheriff's deputy who patrols that area told Action News he has not heard much concern over a rise in crime, and he doesn’t anticipate that will happen.
