Richland Spudnut Shop Spotlighted By Sarah Palin on FOX News
RICHLAND, Wash. -- Forget the space race. Alaska's former governor wants more doughnut shops like the Spudnut Shop in Richland.
Sarah Palin spotlighted the Spudnut Shop in Richland on national TV Wednesday night. While on the FOX News show, On The Record with Greta Van Susteren, Palin dismissed President Barack Obama's call for a "Sputnik moment" because of communist Soviet Union's collapse and debt incurred during that time.
"I listen to that Sputnik talk over and over again and I think we don't need another one of those. You know what we need is a Spudnut moment," Palin said. "The Spudnut shop in Richland, Washington, it's a bakery, it's a coffee shop that's so successful, 60-some years, generation to generation, a family-owned business, not looking for government to bail them out, to make their decisions for them. It's just hard-working, patriotic Americans in this shop. We need more Spudnut moments in America."
Palin's been to the shop before after a Turkey Trot in the Tri-Cities. This time around, Palin's aunt Katie, who lives in Richland, called the crew early Thursday morning to give them a heads up about the broadcast.
Spudnut employee Karen Bohling told KEPR, "It was pretty exciting. Most of the time it was all about the Spudnuts and she mentioned the hard workers, that we were hard workers and everything, so, that was cool of her."
This is actually the shop's fourth appearance on national TV. The doughnut shop was also featured on the Travel Channel, Unwrapped, and Donut Paradise.
It's also likely Palin's mention of the shop is the same reason a 2008 story we covered on Spudnuts suddenly jumped into our "most read" stories on keprtv.com.
