KENNEWICK -- When the news first broke about the longtime teacher William Pickerel, Kennewick High School staff were slow to send out a letter about what happened.

Friday, a week after police arrested Pickerel, a letter went home to students and families.

The school said they were "shocked and deeply disturbed by the recent allegations," and reinforced that safety is their number one priority.

Pickerel taught in the district for nearly 40 years but was most recently a substitute.
