Searching For A Match: Local Bone Marrow Drive To Help Local Cases

WEST RICHLAND--A bone marrow drive in West Richland on Sunday aims to find a match for three people in the region with leukemia.

The drive is also designed to raise awareness about how the marrow registry works and why it's so critical to the people who have not found matches, but still need a bone marrow transplant.

Locally, the drive could benefit a 5 year old girl from Pasco, a Richland man, and a girl from Chelan.

"We are really encouraging people to join the registry because you truly never know who's going to be the next one in search of the one person that can help save their life," Cristina Kaltovsky, a Marrow Program representative said.

The Bone Marrow Registry says it's difficult to get people to sign up because there's a lack of information.

To sign up it's just a simple cheek swab, and it doesn't automatically mean you are a donor.

Plus, the donation process is all done through the blood stream, so it doesn't hurt any more than giving blood.
