Sheriff John Trumbo is leading up the group of security for the event and he says they have been preparing for the 100th anniversary for some time now.”We have done a dry run, we have cussed and discussed preparation for the last three years,” says Trumbo. “I don't think we can be more prepared than we are now.”
To prepare for this special year of Round-Up, security is taking some extra measures. Wireless cameras are being placed all over the stadium and in other areas close to the facility to keep an eye on all those in attendance. This is the first time these cameras have been used at the event, and they were brought in specifically to deal with the large numbers. In addition, Morrow County is loaning out their mobile command center to be used as security's home-base during the event.
New technology and vehicles aren’t the only way Round-Up is preparing. The Pendleton Police and Umatilla Sheriff’s Office don’t have enough forces alone to handle the increase in population. Additional police, state troopers, and even FBI will be at the event in order to insure safety for all those in attendance.
With 75,000 people expected to join a town of 17,000, everyone has a reason to be cautious. Security is gearing up for the challenge and Sheriff Trumbo has a message for everyone. “I'm telling the public come and have a good time and don't worry about any problems because we'll take care of those and I’m telling the bad guys if you want to make a statement you'll need to go somewhere else because we'll be on it"
Law enforcement is ready to have their own round-up of criminals if need be this year.
