Klein Celebrates Last Day with Milestone

A fitting finish.

Word that workers finished cleaning up the last of the sludge from K East Basin couldn't come at any better time for the Energy Department's top man in Richland.

DOE Richland Operations Manager Keith Klein steps into retirement. His last day was Thursday.

"It's the kind of high note that you can only dream about," Klein said. "That you're able to get one more thing in if you will before you leave, one more wonderful memory."

Klein spent eight years at the site before handing over the reigns.

It's been no easy task-- a job with its fill of contaminants, criticism and the challenges of cleanup.

But Klein's opimistic. He says Hanford's set up for success -- and that workers quote "won't miss a beat" when he's gone.
