Calling for More Authority at Hanford

Calling for More Authority at Hanford

By Chelsea Kopta

Pushing for more protection against Hanford waste.

Oregon's Senate passed a resolution calling for more authority on the clean up process.

Leaders said they're concerned about ground water contamination underneath Hanford moving toward the Columbia River.

Oregon officials frequently work with Hanford but want to legally weigh in when it matters.

"In some respects we are treated like any other citizen or stake holder, "said Ken Niles, Assistant Director, Nuclear Safety Division. "Despite the risks we face there we don't have any authority when it comes to hanford cleanup."

The senate sent the resolution to the house for approval.
