Doing the dirty work
By Ryan Harris
Nine nuclear reactors are still spotted around the Hanford reach. They are all closed down, but they still need to be cleaned. Stepping up to do the cleaning is Washington Closure Hanford. They are in charge of the River Corridor Closure Project that transports contaminated soil and debris from cleanup sites to Hanford's Environmental Restoration Disposal Facility. Drivers recently logged over 12 million miles transporting 7.3 million tons of waste to the site. The facility opened in 1996 and once current expansion is complete it will be able to hold 11 million tons of waste.
