Crate training key for travelling pets
If you have a cat or dog, crate training is important. Sooner or later you'll need to take them somewhere in the car.

"And so that crate becomes your pet's portable home. It really becomes a place that they enjoy," says Mikkel Becker, a pet trainer who writes for Vetstreet.com.

Becker says you need to teach your pet that the crate is a safe place.

"Drop in little treats there throughout the day so your cat or dog always goes in to investigate."

If your cat is afraid of this area, which they often are, you can move their food bowl gradually closer to the crate until it's resting on the inside of the crate.

"Once your cat is comfortable with that, so this may be over a period of days, you move the food bowl all the way back into the inside of the crate."

Mikkel says cats often like having the crate covered with a blanket.

Remember, an unsecured pet in the car is not only dangerous for them, it's distracting for you.
