TRI-CITIES, Wash. -- The death of Ana Gutierrez-Ramirez prompted KEPR to look into how much this really happens here in Tri-Cities. We learned it doesn't happen often at all.

The Benton-Franklin Health District doesn't have records yet for last year, but in 2012, the rate was one death as a result of pregnancy for every 100,000 women. In the two years prior, there weren't any pregnancy-caused deaths.

Our maternal mortality rate is low compared to the rest of the country. Nationwide, the average is 21 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births.
