Tournaments packed and businesses ready for Kennewick's Southridge Sports Complex
KENNEWICK - After years of anticipation, the Southridge Sports Complex is nearly complete. Every weekend is booked for a tournament from opening day to August and that's exactly what the city and local businesses have been expecting.
Don Brooks helped open Costa Vida off of Union. It’s only been about five months since they’ve opened, but he’s been pleased with their progress so far.
“You can kind of tell when they walk in the door cause they have a huge smile on their face, yes you're finally here!” said Brooks.
Brooks has been in the food industry for seven years and knows what a boost the summer time can be for restaurants.
“With the sporting events coming in you can always bank on you knowing you're going to peak,” said Brooks. “You're going to climb-up in numbers.”
A big boost is likely to be expected. The new Southridge Sports Complex is just a short drive from Costa Vida, and it opens in just a few weeks.
The city expects the complex to be packed this summer. They already have 16 different tournaments lined up, and the city could add even more. One of the bookings attracts as many as 140 teams from across the country. Kennewick expects this could bring-in over $800,000 into the Tri-Cities I just one weekend.
KEPR also followed up with the cost of building this project. Kennewick is still tallying the final numbers, but expects to be in-line with the roughly nine-million dollar budget. The park is helping neighbors thrive as well.
“I'm so lazy to drive somewhere for a walk, sometimes it's hard but if you go 5 minutes you reach the park and we like it,” said Oleg Aleknovich.
His wife Maria added, “it's a good future for us, the neighborhood and for Kennewick.”
Kennewick looks forward to when the millions of dollars in investments could bring millions back to our local community.
Kennewick says the park will open to the public on March 1st. The official grand opening won't be until March 22nd.
