Friends Remember Shenay Greenough
KENNEWICK, Wash. -- The man charged with killing a teen mom is now behind bars. It's a murder that shocked those who knew 19-year-old Shenay Greenough. Action News sat down with friends to find out more about the young woman whose life was tragically cut short.
Those who knew her, say Shenay Greenough was a sweet-natured girl with a wild streak. “She was very independent, a free-spirit,” Ruth Green said, long-time family friend of Shenay Greenough.
“She was just so happy all the time. She loved people, she loved hugs. She loved hugs,” Hazel Green said, Ruth’s daughter and Shenay’s childhood friend.
“She was kind of like the little sister I never had,” Hazel said, who fondly remembers spending so much time together as kids that they would bicker as if they were part of the same family. “We would hang out so much to the point where we would just have to go home because we would fight all the time. We were like sisters.”
Hazel and Ruth shared memory after memory of Shenay with Action News, including stories of swimming at Silverwood Theme Park, trips to the fair, babysitting adventures and family weddings.
Hazel also told Action News about Shenay's son, a two year old she loved very much. "She was such a good mom, such a good mom,” Hazel said about Shenay’s relationship with her son. “She loved him so much."
Hazel also believed Shenay was excited to have her second child, a girl. "She would have been ecstatic to have a girl, a new little girl in the family," she continued.
Shenay also made an impression at River's Edge High School where she took classes until late 2008. Teachers didn't want to go on camera, but Told Action News, they remember Shenay being pleasant, social and very thoughtful. Principal Dan Chubb says one of her greatest strengths was writing.
"It's just sad that, you know, she's not here anymore," Hazel said, speaking through tears.
It’s unclear exactly how long the young mom knew Kurtis Chapman, the man accused of killing her. Someone named Shenay posted messages on Chapman's myspace page recently saying she loved Chapman and missed him. Franklin County Prosecutors said this was this same man who took her life, charging Chapman with second degree murder for allegedly strangling Greenough this weekend.
The murder has left behind a little boy without a mom, a little girl never to be born and friends clutching the memories of their childhood friend.
Friends reached out to Action News to say they had set up a donation at any Gesa Bank in Shenay’s name.
