Halloween Delights: West Richland Couple Grows 400 Pound Pumpkins
By Chelsea Kopta
WEST RICHLAND, WA -- This isn't the great pumpkin Charlie Brown, but it's still pretty impressive! A local couple has 400-pounds of pumpkin goodness on display at Red Mountain Feed and Irrigation in West Richland.
And that's just one gourd. There are four big Dill Atlantic Giant Pumpkins at the store in all. Each weighs roughly 300 to 400 pounds. Glenn and Sandi Edgemon, a couple from West Richland, spent 400 hours nurturing the pumpkins this season. They started the seeds inside during the winter, then transplated 20 plants outside in a special garden in the spring. They pruned and buried the vines to grow more plant roots, pollinated, fertilized and even squashed beetles to keep out the pests. Believe it or not, this is the first year the Edgemon's tried harvesting big pumpkins. "Fun, yeah I was in it this year to learn more about what to do next year. I was pleasantly surprised that we got some pretty good sized ones," Egdemon said. The Edgemons are already planning on how to grow the pumpkins larger next year. Glenn will will carve out these bad boys for jack-o-lanterns but he does have some extra pumpkin seeds, so if you're interested email chelseak@keprtv.com. If you'd like to see the pumpkins, check them out at Red Mountain Feed and Irrigation on 4390 W. Van Giessen in West Richland. Hurry, they won’t be there long! |
