HERMISTON - There are now 58 homeless students in the Hermiston School District. That's 10 more than last year. The district keeps fighting to help each one. Luckily, last week, they got a little help.
To the tune of four thousand federal bucks. That money will help clothing, transportation to special after school classes, and school supplies.
The Agape House is also chipping in. Staff will fill up back packs full of food for homeless students to take for the weekend.
"About two years ago, one of the grade school principals came and said they had students going home on the weekend and coming back and not really learning on Monday and Tuesday because they didn't have food," said Agape House's Dave Hughes.
The district is also using the cash over at Goodwill, picking up clothes for kids that need it at discounted prices.
"The fact is, the dollar stretches further at Goodwill. The kids can find stuff to keep them warm this winter. That's the win win for Hermiston," said Goodwill's Scott Shinsato.
"The number is growing for us, but we're also seeing with budget cuts in the city... services that are usually provided to these situations are not there anymore. So we can use these funds to help supplement that," said Hermiston Assistant Superintendent, Bryn Browning.
Now this might not be all the help these kids really need. But for 58 kids, its a start for a lot who are just waiting on a sunny day.
