OREGON - Friday is the first Furlough Friday for Oregon state employees.
Basically, it's an unpaid day off. That means you couldn't go to the DMV today, or a Worksource to get help looking for a job. Over 26,000 Oregonians stayed home from work today. The state says it will save about two million bucks each day these agences are shut down. State employees say even though they have a job, they are feeling the pain of a down economy.
“Everyone in state government realizes we need to share the burden of the economic downtown. At the same time, we're considering our clients first and foremost and best interest. We're trying to make accomodations,” said Oregon Family District Manager Linda Olson.
Although most state offices are closed, emergency services like police, fire, and the hospital are still open.
