Home Based Businesses Booming in Pasco
By Lena Vargas
PASCO -- Grasses and weeds are fun for Becki Hamel and her twins looking for bugs in the park. But they're also at the center of her family's home-based lawn care business, Kicking Grass.
She does the books. Her husband does the labor. "There was a need and we kept getting calls asking for help with sprinklers, lawn care and maintenance, etc. So we just felt it was something we had done and helped people out with, better make it legit", said Hamel. They made it legit by getting a business license this year, which means they're part of a 62 percent spike. Rick White with the City of Pasco says so far this year, the city has processed almost as many home occupation permits as we did in all of 2008. As to the why, the Hamels say the economy didn't drive them to start it up, but it helps. Becki and her husband both have full-time jobs, but she's off in the summer. "I know that it does help our financial situation. It helps pick up the pieces during the summer months when we can mow and bring in some extra income", said Hamel. It also helps Matthew Stanley. He got a business license for one aspect of business about a year and a half ago, but didn't get into it full-time until this year. “The housing market on custom houses has been booming for me. Contractors have five or six houses ready for me right now." Both Becki and Matthew say the Tri-cities' phenomenal growth helps a lot. Besides being a home-based business owner, Matthew Stanley is also an ambassador for the Chamber of Commerce. He says in that capacity he has seen more people starting businesses, but not just limited to businesses out of homes. |
