Oregon Job Market Looking Up

HERMISTON - Finding a job is about to get a little easier. It's called the Oregon emergency jobs program, and it's on its way.

“We're hoping we'll hear something this week even. It will create approximately 12,000 jobs that would pay $8.40 to $10 an hour,” said Oregon WorkSource Regional Manager Kathy Mendoza.

What kind of positions would these include?

“These would be all entry level positions, so it would be general labor, working on public works projects,” said Mendoza.

If you live near Hermiston, that means one thing – road work. It should start soon. Hermiston city council just approved $150,000 this week on road improvement.

Another avenue you can go down if you're looking for a job: Hanford.

“They indicated they would be hiring quite a bit more. So we're working with them because Oregon has such a high unemployment rate. We want to direct Oregonians to their website and to their openings they are going to be filling over there,” said Mendoza.

At first glance, you might balk at the travel time. Going to Hanford from Oregon is a haul. However, there is a solution.

“They do have car pool vans and private car pools that people from this area will use to go over there to work,” said Mendoza.

It’s just a few new options for thousands who need it.
