Porn at the Public Library: Who's Regulating It?

PASCO -- This started at the Pasco branch of the Mid-Columbia library where a mom said she saw someone checking out more than just library books, thereby exposing her son to porn on a computer.

She wanted to keep her identity private but wants the message told.

"Current policies only address the issue after being reported," the mom said. "In our case, the damage was already done."

Now, she's calling for more measures including separate viewing rooms and warning signs to alert parents smut could slip through the cracks.

"As long as the possibility exists that young children will be viewing nude images and sexual acts on public library computers, the library should show some kind of accountability and make efforts to ensure children are not exposed.," she said in a statement.

"Within the parameters that we work with as a public agency, I think we take very proactive steps to prevent this from occurring, and it's very infrequent when it does occur," Mid-Columbia Library Administrative Services Director Kyle Cox said.

Cox doesn't believe there's any need for signs. He stands by the library's strict rules: no porn. Period.

"Things are harmful to minors, or of a graphic sexual nature are prohibited uses," he said.

But porn-seekers can be savvy so the Mid-Columbia Library staff have taken steps to protect the public.

There are filters on every computer and those cannot be removed for anyone under 17; unrestricted access is only given to adults for medical research; and there already are separate education computer rooms for children, to name a few.

"A vast majority, maybe 99.9% of the population is acting within complete compliance with both the law and library policy and that's the important thing to keep in mind is how infrequent this does occur," Cox said. "When it does occur, it's horrible, it's regrettable, but we act swiftly to make sure it never happens again."

If you're caught looking at porn library reps said you will be kicked out and they have kicked out people before.

Plus, if something offends you, library staff say you should always tell them.

But we want to know what you have to say about this. Do you think the library needs a sign to warn the public? Take our poll on the home page.
