Teen Wins Bass Tournament
By Holly Zuluaga
KENNEWICK -- A local teen wins big at the Jr. Bass Master Western Divisional Tournament, beating out kids from 10 other states.
“It was close, it wasn't a blowout that's for sure, it had me nervous,” Jake Cook said. 17 year old Jake Cook beat out his opponents by just 2 pounds, but that's all it took to send him to Florida to compete with the best bass fishermen across the country. “I'm not nervous just excited to go there it will be awesome to win, we only have to beat 5 kids, but just being there is going to be cool because I get to meet a bunch of pros,” Jake said. If he wins in Florida, Jake will win a new bass fishing boat and a $5,000 scholarship. Jake wouldn't mind the new boat; the one he practices with is an old one he fixed up. The floor was so rotted there was a tree growing out of it. Jake got started early on, he's been doing it for 10 years, and it all started right in his backyard and in his home. “My dad wanted to take me down there one day and I caught a few bass and I thought it was fun so I started fishing a bunch. It's really in his blood; he comes from a hunting family. For Jake, bass fishing is life. He even met his girlfriend bass fishing. “My dream is to go to the Bass Masters Classic and win it, but that's every bass fisherman’s dream and it's pretty hard to get there,” Jake said. However, it doesn’t mean he won’t try. For now Jake says winning this bass tournament is his biggest accomplishment. |
