RICHLAND--Tenth Graders are taking the WASL for the last time this week.

The WASL is retiring after this year, OSPI says they're working on finding a new test to replace it, students will have to pass that one to graduate, starting next year.

Richland School District says Randy Dorn is pushing for a more computer based test, a transition that will be easy for Richland.

They told Action News that the district is a few steps ahead.

"Richland wanted to find a test that was a little bit more helpful to student learning and so we started using the MAP test and we found it more useful," Steve Aagaard said.

Measures For Academic Progress or MAP is a computer based test.

Richland tells us it gives results back in a snap, so teachers can work on a student's weak areas or play on their strong ones.

"I think the state test that is going to be coming down the line will be easy for districts like Richland and districts that have been using the map tests because it will be similar to that," Steve Aagaard said.

It's not decided what that new test will be.

However, students are promised it will look a lot different, something Richland is ready for.
