PROSSER -- Home Sweet Home's Packing Up & Moving to Prosser. The city's building permits have doubled since last year.

"I'd like to think Prosser is bucking the trend," Planning and Permit Tech Steve Zetz said.

"This is certainly a good report, there's no denying that," Benton County Commissioner Leo Bowman said.

Prosser's permits are a standalone. They're the only city in the county, seeing an uptick in building permits.

"Perhaps what makes Prosser different is our location, small town feel," Zenz said.

The city's got big plans to re-zone a couple dozen acres into agri-tourism hotspots including new wineries like Vintner's Village, and home remodels are keeping Prosser's building business bustling. Last year **$183,414.00.

And Prosser's still got room to grow.

It's certainly a contradiction to the rest of benton county where home permits are down 20 percent.

"The permitting process is an indicator of the vibrancy of your community," Bowman said. "So any time they're down, they're a concern."

A concern since Benton County home permits have been on a downward trend for the last couple years.

"But the concern at this point is, first of all, I'm very pleased to be in benton county," Bowman said.

Bowman's not convinced the slump will stick. and if Prosser's any indecation, he could be right.

"It will get better and our world will get better," Bowman said.

Compared to the rest of the state, Commissioner Bowman said Benton County is still in good shape.
