Rising Waters
By Holly Zuluaga
WALLA WALLA COUNTY--There are flood warnings for both Walla Walla and Benton Counties.
The warm weather and coming rain is likely to put rivers over flood stage, including Walla Walla near Touchet. Last month they were blasted with snow, and now it's all melting at once. "We're level 2, which is a standby mode, which is people should be prepared for possible floods," Nick Plucker said. Walla Walla County declared a state of emergency so that crews can do what they can to clear debris, that might cause flooding in the rivers. "People just need to be prepared," Plucker said. The Mill Creek bridge was The County's Emergency Management Team's biggest concern. Junk had built up under the bridge, and with rising waters, there wasn't anywhere for the water to go, except onto the roads and into homes. It's clear now, but it wouldn't take much for another clog. There is so much water raging, the creek split into two channels, some of it creeping up near homes. "If they have property that butts up to the river, there are some low spots there that the water could go into, you would call it nuisance flooding. Emergency Management also suggests you do a walk through, find places where water could creep in, and put down sandbags. "All depends if we get the rains," Plucker said. For now all crews can do is clear out waterways so it won't cause problems, and hope the damage will only be minor. |
