Richland to Start E-Waste Recycle Program
By Rudabeh Shahbazi
RICHLAND-- If you have old-style "rabbit ears" TV antennas, the time to switch your TV to digital reception is only a month away.
If you choose to buy a new television, and your old one still works, waste managers suggest donating it. But if your old set is junk you can't just toss it in a landfill. Richland is starting an E-waste recycling program in January. It's not only good for the environment, it could ensure your health and safety. "They (old TVs) have a lot of metals," said Richland Solid Waste Manager Kip Eagles. "They have arsenic, lead, cadmium and all those kinds of things. If they find their way to the ground water, it's a really serious contaminant for us." You will be able to recycle your computers and and TV's for free. There are currently dozens of computer monitors at the landfill that were illegally dumped in random spots around Richland. |
