Amazon.com Builds Data Center in Boardman

BOARDMAN - First an Amazon.com call center in came to Kennewick and now a data center is planned in Boardman.

Amazon is tapping into the Columbia Basin once again.

Back out in the corn fields, on a dirt road, a building is taking shape.

The Port of Morrow isn't allowed to say who's moving in to this 60 acre spot, but they can tell us a data center is being built out here in Boardman.

Oregon newspapers say, it's Amazon.com.

"The port has signed a non-disclosure agreement. We knew it would gain a lot of curiosity," said Lisa Mittelsdorf with the Port of Morrow.

In this town of three thousand, folks are buzzing about Amazon moving in.

Boardman is no Silicon Valley, this data center's neighbors aren't people making micro chips, they're making potato chips and fries and processing onions.

So this is something new for the port's industrial park, but that's the idea.

"It's good for us to be diverse. I have to say it's location that's driving industry here with the river, rail and access to freeway," said Mittelsdorf.

The data center will bring in up to 200 construction jobs and once it's up and running, 20 people will work here full time.

And that's only phase one, there's also talks to adding two more centers just like this one.

Those are all opportunities for new employment, despite a rough economy.

Phase one should be done by next year.
